MAYAN-TOLTEC ASTROLOGY: 300-1100 AD
The Caracol (tower) at Chichen Itza (Mexico) was
built by the Toltecs in 1050 AD. The caracol was
essentially an observatory in which the Toltec
priests could study the heavens. The Mayans
eventually devised a 365 day calendar and their own
version of the 12 signs of the zodiac. Their calendar
was the most accurate in the world until the adoption
of the Gregorian calendar in Europe in 1582. The
Mayan culture produced almanacs (The Codex Tro-
Cortesianus) of astronomical and astrological
information.
The Mayan culture flourished from about 300 AD
to 900 AD, although its influence in the Yucatan
continued until the Spanish conquerors arrived in
the 16th century. Its origins might trace back to
perhaps as early as 1500 BC.
